Reading

So far, I hate almost everyone in this book except for Wolven and Cas.  Alstair betrays them. He is an entitled jerk who is working with Jansen. Jansen is a changeling who did a lot of horrible things including killing a child, pretending to be people, and imprisoning Poppy. He is a so-called guardian but I'm not buying it.   Poppy imprisoned What is this Prophesy? Alstair was there the night her parents died and betrayed her parents. Poppy's mom was a handmaiden to the queen. What does this mean? Alstair wants her dead and to give her to the ascended. He thinks she can't control herself and her rage. They drugged her. Casteel, Kieran and Jasper are hurt :(  Wolven, Cas, and Cas's father rescue her  Alstair is dead. Thank God she didn't actually ascend. Poor Kieran- He's watched them have sex like three times What is the Brotherhood? Alstair is still alive but going to be killed. What is poppy?  I have a love-hate relationship with Casteel: one minute I hate him, and the next I love him. But let's start at the beginning.   Casteel is forcing her to marry him, taking away her choice yet again. It's the way he says it too.  We go home to marry, my princess.  Just yuck. Not a great start. So, Poppy is descended from Atlantia. How did no one know? or did they? Is Casteel just going to kill anyone who disagrees with him? Can you say toxic?Alstair is the advisor to king and queen. Casteel is planning to use her. Kieran implying that he is the only one she  doesn't have to fear. I hate the nickname Princess. Casteel is a jerk. If he loved her, he would let her go. Not force her to marry him. I hate him, screw him. He's a jailer, nothing more and he is possessive over her. I haven't hated someone this much since tamlin in ACOTAR. I hope she gets free. I hate him but I also hate the Ascended. Is no one in the book except Poppy and Alstair redeemable? ...

 A lovely, chaotic mess. As were my thoughts about this book. It was a rollercoaster and sometimes I wasn't sure what to think.  We open with Poppy, who is the Maiden, aka the chosen of the gods. But she doesn't have a choice in the matter. However, she is not what she is expected to be. For instance, she is visiting the Red Pearl at the book's beginning. We learn that as the maiden, Poppy is guarded and few see her face as she wears a veil in public. But she does like to sneak out and knows how to fight. She can also read people's emotions referred to as her gift. It is revealed that Poppy has numerous things expected of her, namely her upcoming ascension, where she is given to the gods. Her brother Ian has already ascended and has married. It is clear early on that Poppy has little choice in her life.  We are also introduced to the Duke and Duchess, the Descenters, and the Dark One aka Prince Casteel who all, except for the Duke and Duchess, perceive as the enemy.
