What a fricken rollercoaster, good lord

This book opens with Casteel imprisoned in a cell, bound with shadowstone and injured. There are Craven attacks as they are free roaming. He is losing too much blood. He discovers that the queen is a false god, a demis. 

Meanwhile, Poppy and the army are liberating cities controlled by the Ascended. In one of the cities, there are people that were killed and impaled, and their faces were covered with veils. Clearly, a message for Poppy but it is disgusting. They take Massense. 

Vonetta and Emil are so cute. Vessa is creepy. The blood queen sent a package which turns out to be Cas' finger 🤢They plan to go to Carsodonia to rescue Cas. Vassa summons a storm which is an awakening of death. Kolis is the previous primal of death and Eythos is the first primal of life. 

I love how Valyn is protective of Poppy, loves her and doesn't want to lose her. 

What happened to Preela is disgusting and the fact Poppy's dagger is made from her bones is horrible. 

Poppy is a great queen and the ascended are awful.

Poppy and Cas are heartmates ❤️

Oak Ambler

The Duke did not agree to their demands. 

Siege

The wolven are with them and the mortals are escaping. Another rite has been done, and it is not normal to have two rites back to back. They plan to seize Oak Ambler and then rescue Casteel. The guards are on the rise and in the city. They are preventing the mortals from leaving and are hurting them. The draken destroy the gate and thousands escape. The ascended left the townspeople to fend for themselves. They take the inner rise down (of the castle) and the ascended surrender. But the Craven come and they lose Arden. It is discovered that the Ascended turned the servants and fled the city. Horrible. The priest and priestess serve the true king (is this Malec?). Everyone who was given over in the last rite was killed. 

Perry was injured 🥲But Poppy heals him. Perry and Delano are cute ❤️That kiss 😍

Tawny is okay. Thank god. She tells poppy that Vikter was her viktor, what is this? He was meant to protect her. Tawny tells her the full prophecy which is more detailed. 

Heartmates and dream walking This was an interesting idea but also confusing. I love that they are heartmates but I don't understand the dream walking. Either way, Cas tells Poppy that he is a tunnel system and tells her what Isbeth is. The craven attack again and they are starving Cas. 

Poppy feeding from Kieran. actually really sweet. 

On the road to Carsodonia, they are intercepted by a handmaiden and Poppy is hit with an arrow (shadowstone). They are taken to Wayfair Castle. And here it is getting even more confusing. The dark one was her mother's Viktor. What the f is happening? It's getting more confusing. She is brought to the queen and then sees Cas and he does know her. Millicent the handmaiden is Poppy's sister. Seriously? Poppy will complete her culling soon. 

Plan to rescue Cas Poppy summons the mist and (accidently) Craven. fight their way out. Malik helps for Millicent, his heartmate. Callum injured Cas, he is very nearly gone. This d*mn book and it's twists and turns. 

Poppy is a primal. For goodness sake, stop changing what she is!!! She is meant to the destroy the realms, the harbringer. Can they just say what she is already?? She is going to be a titan next or something! Also, she created the mist.

Malik is the dark one. Didn't see that coming. He led the Craven to her family and they killed her parents. He meant to kill her. I don't care if it was for the kingdom to protect Cas, he's bastard and he deserved Cas beating him up. But he doesn't know the rhyme about the pretty poppy. Then who said that? 

Isbeth finds them again. For goodness sake. She offered them a deal, bring her Malec and Kieran lives (cursed by Callum). 

This fricken ending, good lord. 

Okay, so Isbeth is the harbinger, and Poppy is the bringer of death and destruction. What is happening? This book is messing with my brain. Malec is not the true king. Then who is? 

Oh, goodness. You mean the true king is Kolis? The guy mentioned at the beginning and never again? For crying out lord. I can't with these plot twists. Kolis is awake but Malec is not dead after Isbeth stabbed him. and Seraphina is the primal of life. Kolis is her great-uncle and Seraphina is her aunt. (formerly known as the Consort of Nyktos but actually isn't.) Poppy completes her culling but the war is not over because Kolis is awake? 

I need the next book now. What a chaotic mess but I need more.

Allowing the essence of the primal god to surface was like having the golden chains removed and the veil lifted. The more I allowed it to happen, the more it felt... natural. I didn't think this would weaken me because it felt like I was no longer hiding who I was. It was almost a relief. -Poppy
