House of Earth and Blood (Crescent City # 1)
What is with authors and killing off characters I like? The fact that this book begins with the pack of devils dying kills me. And after when we find how bad Bryce is doing which makes sense of course. Then Micah "visits" her at her work and tells her that the person everyone believed killed her friends, Phillip Briggs, did not actually do it. Now she's tasked with finding out the truth with a fallen angel, Hunt as her bodyguard. Somewhere in the course of the investigation, she starts to fall for Hunt, even if she doesn't know it yet. It turns out that Danika killed the pack and then herself after being injected with Synth, a synthetic drug. And how does she figure this out? Well, turns out Hunt is involved in planning a new rebellion involving taking synth. And that he knew about Danika for days and didn't tell her. His wings are cut off and he is sold to his former owner.
But it doesn't end there. Turns out Micah planned Danika's death and injected her with synth. She kills Micah and the new witch queen removes Hunt's halo, the symbol of his enslavement, and he kills Sandriel. However, there is a problem. The horn (Previously revealed to be tattooed on Bryce's back) has caused the gates to be opened releasing demons into the city (because of Micah). As a result, the Asteri launch Brimstone missiles to destroy the demons. Bryce manages to close one gate but can't close any more gates. She makes the drop with Danika as her anchor (which is supposed to be impossible) and she survives. Her firstlight enables her to close the gates and bring hunt back to life (they were hit by a missile.
My impressions:
This book was amazing from start to finish. I was so sad when Danika and the pack of devils died. '
I love her with Hunt.
There were many shocking revelations including Danika being the killer. Micah orchestrated it and Bryce killing him. Hunt killing Sandriel. Bryce's starborn powers.
